We all have a favorite side of a cheese grater that we like to use.
Maybe you’re a fan of the classic side of the grater, perfect for turning a block of delicious cheese into a pile of shredded goodness or tossing extra veggies like carrots and zucchini into kids’ bolognese.
Or maybe you’re more into grating because when you’re feeling fancy and want your parmesan to be light and subtle to sprinkle over pasta.
Maybe you haven’t stopped using the spiky side of the grater since you discovered its true purpose – peeling citrus fruits or grinding things like nutmeg.
But one side that is often overlooked is the narrow side with the wide horizontal slits, also referred to as the ‘blade’ side, the ‘mandoline’ side, or in my house, ‘WTF is that for?’ on the side of
So, WTF IS FRI
Let’s find out.
And no, it’s not there just to provide more opportunities to cut off fingers, even though it looks like some kind of medieval torture device.
The ‘hidden’ feature of the cheese grater
One Instagram user thinks they’ve finally discovered the answer to what this mysterious side was created for.
Taking to her account, @jjwthebadhair shared a clip of her partner demonstrating his true purpose: cutting cheese.
“Every cheese grater has a single blade or a double blade side,” he says.
He then presses a block of cheese up and down one of the blades a few times and then shows the camera the uniform slices of cheese he has made.
“Perfect slice!” he says proudly.
It turns out that he is asking for money.
According to Martha Stewart’s blog, “the wide horizontal slots are designed for cutting. It’s not as effective as a mandoline or sharp knife, but it works well for quickly slicing cheese (or vegetables like cucumbers).
“Use it to make wide chunks of hard and semi-hard cheeses – when you want to garnish a pasta dish or salad with evenly shaved parmesan or pecorino or add a few thin slices of cheddar, aged Gouda or Gruyère to a sandwich.”
“I never knew it existed”
The clip has now been viewed over 1.4 million times, and because it’s online, thousands of people have claimed to already know about it.
“What did you think it was there for?” asked one person.
The poster replied: “I literally never knew it existed.”
One sarcastic commenter then wrote: “Some days I don’t feel bright anymore. Then I go on social media and feel like a genius.”
Having said that, some viewers were still impressed, saying that they too had no idea about this feature.
“HOLY SH*T THIS IS GONE,” said one.
“My life has been changed forever! I didn’t know that… how? I’m learning more here online,” wrote another.
And someone else said, “Excuse me, what??? My mind is blown.”
Then this person suggested, “I use it to cut potatoes when I’m too lazy 😂.”
“Thank you. I used to wait for apple slices all day for my kids,” wrote another. “Never again.”
